In a special ceremony in Minsk, Belarusian Prime Minister Alexander Turchin, acting on behalf of President Alexander Lukashenko, presented Letters of Appreciation from the Head of State to distinguished educators, students, and cadets. Among the honorees was Andrey Tsurikov, Professor at the Department of Biology at Francisk Skorina Gomel State University and, concurrently, Professor at the Department of Ecology, Botany, and Nature Conservation at Samara University.
Professor Tsurikov joined forces with Samara University in 2016. Since then, he has successfully defended his doctoral dissertation, earned his Doctor of Biological Sciences degree, and achieved the title of Professor. He continues to mentor students in modern, innovative methods of biological research. Andrey Gennadievich is widely recognized as a world-class expert in modern lichenology—the science of lichens, encompassing their taxonomy, distribution, and ecological roles.
Reflecting on the honor, Professor Tsurikov emphasized the profound impact of state backing on his career and his students' success:
"I have felt attention and support throughout my entire life—support from the state, and first and foremost, from the President. Over the years, I was awarded the Presidential Scholarship three times as a postgraduate student and twice as a young scientist. Furthermore, our student research laboratory, 'Flora and Vegetation,' received backing from the Special Presidential Fund for the Support of Gifted Students in 2020. Thanks to this grant, we established a state-of-the-art laboratory where we study the genetic aspects of various organisms. This is incredibly important for our students. They feel this support too; it highly motivates them and helps attract many young talents to our university."
Andrei Tsurikov’s award is a high-level certificate of the scientific school that is being developed at Samara University. His pioneering research in lichenology, coupled with the integration of innovative methodologies into the educational process, makes a substantial contribution to the advancement of ecological sciences and the training of a new generation of researchers. Joint projects, knowledge exchange, and interdisciplinary research remain vital components of the university's strategy, aimed at strengthening international scientific ties and nurturing globally competitive talent.
